Let's write a new chapter together.
I'm excited to announce the launch of my new Substack, a platform where I'll be sharing insights, stories, and updates about the various creative projects I’m involved in. This new venture is a way to connect with a wider audience, to provide a behind-the-scenes look at my work, and to dive deeper into the themes that drive my storytelling.
For those who might be new here, my work spans multiple mediums and platforms. I’m the host of the long-running podcast Behind The Spine, the creator of the audio drama The End of the Line, and the driving force behind The Writing Salon and various other creative projects under the inkjockey banner. Each of these projects is distinct, yet they all share a common thread: a deep commitment to storytelling that challenges, inspires, and entertains.
Story
Let me take you through the different projects you'll be hearing more about on this Substack:
1. Behind The Spine Podcast
Behind The Spine is more than just a podcast; it's a journey into the heart of storytelling. Each episode features in-depth conversations with guests from a wide range of disciplines, exploring how narrative shapes our understanding of the world. Whether it's discussing the latest book, dissecting the structure of a film, or delving into personal stories, this podcast uncovers the lessons that writers can learn from every aspect of life. What sets Behind The Spine apart is the discovery process — the way I strive to make each guest sound like the best version of themselves through thoughtful questions and extensive research.
2. The Writing Salon
The Writing Salon is a unique event I host at The Union Club in London. It’s a space where writers of all levels can come together to explore new ideas, genres, and storytelling techniques. Unlike traditional writing workshops, The Writing Salon draws inspiration from the most unlikely places, encouraging participants to think outside the box. It’s an energising environment where creativity flows, ideas are shared, and stories come to life.
3. The End of the Line Audio Drama
This audio drama is particularly close to my heart. The End of the Line explores the often-ignored perspectives of women who don’t have children, whether by choice or circumstance. Each episode is a poignant, standalone story that reflects real-life experiences, brought to life by talented actors. The series has been praised for its depth and sensitivity, offering a platform for voices that are too often silenced.
4. Residency Events and Live Shows
Beyond the podcast and audio drama, I also host live residency events. These are intimate, in-person experiences where I interview guests in front of a live audience. These events, often held at prestigious venues like The Groucho Club, offer a unique blend of entertainment and education, allowing the audience to engage directly with the stories and ideas that shape our culture.
Lessons
Through these diverse projects, I’ve learned that storytelling is an ever-evolving craft. Whether it’s the precision required in audio drama, the spontaneity of live interviews, or the deep introspection of podcasting, each medium offers its own challenges and rewards. The common thread, however, is the power of narrative to connect us, to challenge our perceptions, and to inspire change.
